Austria - Dead Mountain - Almberg

research tour in Almberg cave system (1624/018)
Participants: Thomas Baynes, Thomas-Michael Schneider, Sven Woelfel
over the extended May 1 weekend caused the cave and karst research group francs (FHKF) by first surveying trip in the Almberg ice and stalactite cave in the mountains Grundlseer. Since August 2006, this part of the Almberg cave system (1624/018) which came from the merger of the snow cone or cavity (1624/110) to pass.
goal of the research tour search and survey of two compounds was the snow cone cave to get an overall plan for creating a large Ringzug. Both cases were suspected in the eastern main course of the cave, but was primarily reached only through the western entrance, since two manhole steps leading up denied, 7 and 25m direct access through the eastern entrance. Back in February this year, these two bays (fire escape and Wolf Canyon), during a Vortour committed and equipped. It could be taken in the current navigation of the much shorter ascent over the eastern entrance.
total length 665m course on this tour were newly measured and builds on the RTK-GPS surveying outside of 2006. Both cases, however, could not be found. The orientation on the basis of an old, relatively inaccurate Plan to us occasionally hampered rapid progress of the survey work. In addition, the planning of the tour due to missing sections and altitude data makes it difficult. It turned out that the first connection is not looking where there may be suspected, since the corresponding part of the cave is in reality about 160m away. The subsequent, transitional passages in question are more than 100m above the Verbindungsschluf, so that eliminated them. After the second connection could not be searched for lack of time, so that we can only guess at present again when we need to look for the connections. The solution to the puzzle and the related measurement of both caves will hopefully succeed at the next tour. (Thomas-Michael Schneider, 5.2007)
